As a trauma survivor and angel mom, I am no stranger to feeling low. Even when I load myself of healthy foods and good supplements, there are still days where all I want to do is crawl into bed – pretty much forever. That is totally fine to have bad days, we just need to always remind ourselves to get back up the next day and try again. The emotions that we have – are there for a reason and there is nothing that can take them away completely, only things to take the edge off.

Below are the things I personally use and have seen results from. As the holidays are upon us, I know everything can feel intensified so now is a good time to share! Don’t ever hesitate to reach out to me with questions. I am always here for you 😊

Nutrient-sparse processed foods could up your depression by as much as 60 percent. That is a lot! And keep note – it takes time for nutrients that are low in our system to build, so it is never an overnight fix. All of the supplements listed fight to keep your brain functioning healthy and a healthy brain is the first line of defense against depression!

Omega 3’s: Omega-3 fatty acids provide building blocks for healthy brain development and function. The body’s cardiovascular system is interconnected with the neurovascular system, which is responsible for the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the brain. This is why anti-inflammatories such as omega-3s are so important to overall brain health and function- therefore when we are deprived of omega 3’s – the brain’s levels of the chemicals serotonin and dopamine – both essential to the regulation of mood – are reduced. I have used Nordic Naturals for years and even use their children’s supplements for my girls.

B Vitamins: There is a list that these vitamins do for our body but as for our mental health, they play a strong role in providing the right brain chemicals that affect our mood and other important brain functions – especially B 12. B12 is the largest and most complex chemical structure of all the vitamins, assisting the nervous system, brain function, adrenals, communication between our cells.

I came to find out after I lost Joseph that I have one mutation of MTHFR. This is something to talk to your doctor about if you want to learn more, however basically for me, I cannot process and activate B vitamins, so I take a special supplement of activated B’s. However, a good whole food B Complex otherwise is recommended to make sure you are getting a good supply of your B’s. I love Mega Food brand vitamins and have used their multivitamin for a long time.

Vitamin D Drops: A boost of sunshine fixes everything! That is so true and therefore, good levels of vitamin D are very helpful with how we feel! Plus – for breastfeeding mamas, you need your levels to be high enough to pass through your breast milk – I know, a very random little tip (but important one!) Vitamin D is required for brain development and function. Deficiency in this “sunshine vitamin” is sometimes associated with depression and other mood disorders (mostly in the fall and winter) I drop a few drops directly in my mouth each day and tastes like lemon!

Magnesium – Up to half of us are deficient in this! Magnesium is like a stress antidote – or as I like to use “natures chill pill”. It is highly effective to reduce anxiety and help you to feel calmer and more in control. I use Natural Calm, one serving in a mug of hot water OR when I can get to ordering this – I order this instead and add a few drops to my smoothies!

If you are in the postpartum period – keep taking your prenatal vitamin along with these recommended supplements or a good postnatal vitamin!
