“The rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind, and the harmony of the soul create the symphony of life.” – B.K.S. Iyengar

Believe. Conceive. Receive.

Yoga has brought incredible healing to my mind, body and soul. It’s been many years later in my journey that I started my practice and I am now a PROUD yoga instructor. There are so many beautiful facets to the study of yoga and I am still learning. Yoga is known to reduce stress and is all about “The Journey” – it is truly a journey of the self. It also aides in healing many ailments in the body, mind and spirit and is especially beneficial with fertility. Fertility yoga reminds you that you are worthy of what you desire – you are meant to bring the baby you feel all around you into this world. While it does not guarantee conception – it certainly enhances the possibility.

Fertility is not something that comes easily to many couples. There are over a million couples that are currently struggling to conceiving and bring their baby into this world. As a loss mom, my heart is with every parent out there that is feeling the devastating effects of infertility or pregnancy loss. The many doctors that specialize in this field are truly heroes in their own right, but as a fertility and birth specialist with my own services to offer – I know very well that it takes a tribe of practitioners and family to help parents achieve their parenting goals and wishes.

There are many ways in which I can assist parents and one of my favorite is yoga. Whether yoga for fertility may be new to you or you have heard of it’s benefits before, let’s go over the reasons why yoga can enhance your chances of a successful pregnancy. So, listen up hopeful mamas-to-be and take a deep breath!

Before I give a general overview and offer a few postures to try at home, I will start with this first most important mindset: Believe. Do you believe that your body is capable of bringing life into this world? Changing your mindset is the very first step before anything else you do, even before you step foot into a fertility specialist’s office. Our minds are so powerful, that if you believe that you are not capable, it may make your desired outcome harder to reach. Belief turns on our conscious thoughts towards our own selves. The more you believe in yourself and the wonderful capabilities that your body has, no matter how hard this journey has been, you are increasing your fertility by leaps. Your beliefs will automatically tune you into what your body needs throughout the whole journey of preconception, pregnancy and birth!

The more a woman listens to and reads the signs that are showing up in her body, the more she will understand and gain confidence as she moves forward and the more she will be able to embrace all that is happening in her fertility journey.

Now let’s turn to knowing more about fertility yoga. Conceive. The benefits of yoga for fertility, after you have changed your beliefs about what your body can do, changes everything. Okay, maybe the first part may take a little longer to achieve, but that is alright too. 😊

Many of you may already know the general benefits that yoga brings such as: increased flexibility and strength, improves balance, maintains healthy joints and circulation, regulates endocrine system and reduces inflammation, improves sleep and the list goes on and on. But how does yoga for fertility differentiate from these general benefits?

Here are some benefits to consider:

  • Increases blood flow to the pelvic region
  • Stimulates the reproductive system by directly focusing on the uterus and ovaries
  • Supports and improves your endocrine system (all of your hormones love this help!)
  • Reduces stress (prolonged stress plus pregnancy equals NO!)
  • Helps regulate your monthly cycle
  • Pulls you out of negative thinking
  • Uses meditation and visualization to optimize conception (don’t ever underestimate the power of the mind!)
  • Balances yin/yang energy (masculine and feminine energy)
  • Strengthens the life-force energy in your body – helping you to feel like a super mom already!

Sign. Me. Up! Right?

Below are a few postures to try:Wait until your next cycle begins and try these postures during the first half of your cycle.  Next to the posture is an explanation of why they help:

1 – Sacrum circles

Circle your knees in one direction – then the opposite. Sync your breath with each circle.

This movement massages the sacrum, which is where your “reproductive energy” sits. This move stimulates that area and give you a chance to practice breath-work.

2 – Pelvic Tilts

Gently, tilt the pelvis to press your lower back to the floor on your exhale and on your inhale, release. Do this about 10 to 15 times.

Note: there are other ways to do this exercise that strengthen your core – do not do that way! This gentle version is used to rock the pelvis – to encourage blood flow and release tension.

3- Reclined Cobbler Pose

Slowly allow your knees to open apart from each other (while laying on your back) and bring the soles of your feet together. Rest your hands on your belly. Stay here for 10 to 15 breaths.

This pose relaxes and opens the whole pelvic bowl and allows the organs of the pelvic bowl to release any tension they may be holding. It is also relieving for menstrual cramping and stretches out the hips!

Finally! Receive. Allowing yourself to fully submerge into the entire process, loving yourself through it all – helps you to receive your baby with an open heart- and receive prior to even conceiving! The day you give birth is not the first line of communication between you and your little one. Yoga helps you to slow down and call in the spirit of your baby, starting in preconception. This helps the baby to feel safe and comfortable as he/she is being lovingly received by you.

Pay attention to the changes that may take place around you after you open the lines of communication between you and your baby. Perhaps your dreams become more vivid, filling you with messages and guiding you to different things that may help you. Maybe you see signs while awake such as: repeated numbers, patterns, names, letters or new doors open for new opportunities. Your baby wants and needs you to not only prepare your body, but your mind and heart too!

Receiving is about creating space for love and light to come into your being each day. We can do that in many ways through prayer, meditation or simply breathing in nature. It reduces fear and opens the heart to receiving a love that is greater and bigger than anything we can imagine. This love helps us to relax and surrender, reduce fear and anxiety – and feel safe and protected.

So to all of you who are having struggles to conceive, fears during pregnancy or just simply waiting… hold space for quiet meditation and connection to your Higher Self so that your inner self can grow and shine.  Practice, practice, practice!

You can do it! The rewards are worth it. May it bring you a sense of ease and peace, love and joy like you have never known. And finally – set your worries aside my dear ones and flow with your body, not against, as it does the job it knows to do.

    Great post! Thanks for sharing.
I took up yoga during my pregnancy, and after our daughters stillbirth I started a new class to aid my recovery. I really believe it will help with my fertility. Xx

Yes same here! And it helps with menstrual cramps 🙂
